Accessibility

Prepared October 10, 2026. Updated October 12, 2026.

Our commitment

Stratum is for everyone who loves discovering, rating and sharing their experiences, and that includes people with disabilities. We want you to be able to rate, save, search and meet people in the app whether you use a screen reader, larger text, switch controls, voice control, or just your thumbs.

Stratum is built and run by one independent developer, so we’re honest below about what works, what doesn’t yet and how we check.

Where we stand

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. That standard is the technical basis for many accessibility laws and standards, including EN 301 549 in the European Union.

Based on our own testing, we believe most of the app meets that standard. We haven’t yet had an independent audit, and we have a few known limitations (listed below), so we describe Stratum as partially conformant. We don’t claim full conformance.

What works today

Screen readers
Buttons, icons and controls have labels so TalkBack on Android and VoiceOver on iOS can announce what they do.
Text size
Text follows your phone’s text-size setting.
Reduced motion
The intro animation respects your phone’s reduce-motion setting.
Colour and contrast
Stratum uses light text on a dark background. We don’t rely on colour alone to show ratings: every rating shows its score as text, and each star step has a text label, from “Nope” to “Perfect”.
Rating
You can rate by tapping a star step or by dragging. Dragging is never required.
Signing in
There are no passwords to remember and no puzzles to solve. You enter a six-digit code from your email, and you can paste it in. If a code expires (after 5 minutes), you can ask for a new one.
Clear errors
When something goes wrong, you get a short message in plain language rather than a technical error.
Reporting and blocking
You can report or block someone from the three-dot button on their profile. The menu is two plain rows, reporting is a short list of reasons, and Blocked accounts in Settings has a clearly labelled Unblock button for each person.
Notifications
You can pause notifications from Settings at any time. They are scheduled on your phone and you control the permission in your phone’s settings.

Known limitations

These are the gaps we know about. We’re working on them, and we’d rather you hear about them from us.

Autoplaying carousels
The picks on the Home screen advance on their own every 7 to 10 seconds. They pause for 15 seconds after you swipe, but there isn’t yet a button to pause them for good. We plan to add one.
Swipe gestures
Some actions rely on swiping, for example deleting a notification. If a gesture is hard for you, email us and we’ll help. We’re working on adding alternatives.
Images from other sources
Cover art comes from third-party catalogues, and profile photos and banners are uploaded by people using Stratum. These images don’t come with descriptions. Titles and creators are always shown as text alongside covers.
Third-party descriptions
Descriptions of the things you find in Stratum, such as songs, films and books, come from third-party sources. We can’t edit them, and they may be in another language or have formatting problems.
Portrait only
The app is locked to portrait orientation. If you keep your phone mounted in landscape, you can’t rotate Stratum to match. We’d like to support landscape in the future.
Dark theme only
Stratum has one dark appearance. There isn’t a light mode yet.

How we test

We use automated accessibility checks and scanners on both Android and iOS. They flag things like low text contrast, tap targets that are too small and controls without labels, and we fix what they find. We re-check whenever we add or change a feature.

Automated tools can’t catch everything, and we haven’t yet had an independent audit or formal testing with disabled users, which is why we don’t claim full conformance. We welcome feedback from people who use assistive technology every day, because you’ll find things we won’t.

Devices and software

Stratum is a mobile app for Android and iOS, and is designed to work with the accessibility features built into each, including TalkBack and VoiceOver. It doesn’t depend on any browser or plug-in. This statement covers the app. Our website, including the support chat, uses plain text fields and buttons with labels, and if you find a problem there, tell us the same way.

Tell us about a problem

If something in Stratum is hard or impossible to use, or you need something in a different form, email hello@joinstratum.app with “Accessibility” in the subject. It helps if you tell us:

  • what you were trying to do, and on which screen
  • what happened instead
  • your phone, its operating system and any assistive technology you use

We aim to reply within 7 days, tell you what we can do, and give you a way to do what you were trying to do in the meantime. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you may be able to contact the accessibility enforcement body in your country.

About this statement

We prepared this statement on October 10, 2026 by evaluating the app ourselves. We review it at least once a year, and whenever we make a major change to the app. For how we handle your information, see our Privacy Policy.
